Nice Ride. Karis Teetan rode Scented Ash to victory
On a tough afternoon for punters at Fairview on Friday, Yvette Bremner’s game Ashaawes filly Scented Ash showed that she is a lot better than most of us may think she is, when storming clear to win the R130 000 Listed Breeders Guineas run over a mile in fine style.
The Cheveley Stud bred filly, who runs in the silks of prominent local owner Hedley McGrath, had scored an upset win in the Breeders Guineas Plate at Arlington in mid February, but was nevertheless allowed to run wild here at 16 to 1.
The pace was set by Dorrie Sham’s pacy Dreamwalker, who charged around from her wide draw to lead Scented Ash, with Hazel Jay and Count To Ten further back.
Turning for home, Dreamwalker continued to lead as the bright yellow silks of Count To Ten loomed up dangerously down the centre, as Teetan gathered Scented Ash for her effort.
Inside the final 300m Deepo flattered as Scented Ash swept into the lead, chased by Count To Ten.
Under a confident balanced ride by Karis Teetan, Scented Ash went on to win by 0,75 lengths in a time of 98,50 secs.
The Cape based favourite Count To Ten had every chance, but had no answer to the superior finishing burst of the Bremner horse
The Alan Greeff trained Silvan Spirit stayed on well for third, while outsider Hazel Jay ran out of her skin to finish fourth.
Tara Laing’s fancied and previously consistent Captain Al filly Tudor Star had no finish, and plodded into eight place and 6,75 lengths behind the winner.

A very disappointing effort indeed from a filly who has been a model of application since arriving in the Eastern Cape.
Scented Ash was bred by Cheveley Stud and is by Ashaawes out of the unraced Jallad mare, Self Scented.
A winner of 3 of 13 starts for 4 places, she looks a really talented spirit who is continuing to up her game and mature.
Scented Ash is a R50 000 National Yearling Sale graduate and took her earnings to R178 625.
This was a well deserved first dollop of black type for a filly who is sending out all the right signals.
She can be followed with confidence against her own sex, and appears to be getting better with each and every run.
