Hospitalised for over two months now, popular racing man Rouvaun Smit is recovering slowly, while overcoming the odds and learning to try and walk again after serious spinal surgery.
While he is some way off striding through the gates of Hollywoodbets Kenilworth as we became accustomed to for so many years, Rouvaun is a fighter and doggedly determined to get back to his family and call home the winners.
But there is a separate challenge, entirely.
It’s never easy to ask for help, but we offered to support the Smit family’s bid to cushion the financial knockout of a catastrophe we all dread, and few are prepared for.
Regrettably, the medical aid has not covered the cost of essential equipment required to ensure that he can live relatively comfortably at home, attend to his daily routines, and enjoy some mobility. This includes a special wheelchair and other costly items.
It goes without saying that despite the kind support of various individuals, the family has suffered financial strain and purchasing the essential equipment is a real challenge.
If anybody is able to and feels it in their heart to assist with even R1, every cent will help to alleviate the trauma and ease the burden.
