There is really little wrong with hanging around until curtain call on July day to have a bite at the R1 million stake cherry offered by the local breeders club in the 1300m KZN Yearling Sale Million. With 14 qualifying 2yo’s lining up, it was left to a Mambo In Seattle filly to bank the generous R625 000 first cheque.

‘This non black-type race was restricted to all qualifying graduates of the 2013 KZN Yearling Sale as determined by the KZN Breeders Club and the related conditions of the Sale.

The race is all about a great incentive and a reasonably quick return on investment for buyers. The top four finishers didn’t cost a bar between them. The winner went for R270 000, the second horse R70 000, the PE challenger just R60 000 and the eventual favourite, R275 000.

Cape trainer Vaughan Marshall saddled a coupling that was headed by the promising Antonius Pius colt Man From Milan who was sent off the  weak 7 to 2 favourite.

David Niewenhuizen’s Way West filly Green Crest also attracted plenty of interest into 11 to 2, while Dennis Drier’s Gr1 placed Beckedorf and the Duncan Howells filly Same Jurisdiction were freely available at sixes.

Drawn out at 14, the recent Gold Medallion fourth placed Beckedorf was brought across beautifully from his wide draw by Sean Cormack and the son of A P Answer showed the way until late in the race, before capitulating to a sustained late effort from Duncan Howells’ Same Jurisdiction.

The Mambo In  Seattle filly powered in to win by 2,25 lengths in a time of 79,02 secs.

There is no question that Beckedorf’s draw proved the spoiler but he stayed on gallantly for second with the PE visitor Shine Like A Star finding traffic problems late but also showing up nicely into third.

The pacy Glen Kotzen-trained Garden Treasure was just shaded by the favourite Man From Milan, who could only bank a fourth cheque.

Klawervlei Stud bred the winner, who cost R270 000 on the KZN Yearling Sale.

She is a daughter of Mambo In Seattle out of the lightly raced one-time winning Captain Al mare, Diana De Carlo.

Mambo In Seattle is a son of Kingmambo and stands at Moutonshoek. His first crop sold for decent numbers in 2013

Same Jurisdiction has now won 2 of her 3 starts with 1 place and R679 675 in stakes.

That means the owners are well ahead on this beautiful filly!
