Gavin van Zyl has been given the green light to conduct a barrier trial for five of his unraced two-year-olds before the polytrack racemeeting at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Monday.
Gold Circle report that the former jockey and now Summerveld trainer said: “This is just a Gavin van Zyl idea in the interests of transparency for both the public and my owners. Instead of having comments such as ‘might be green’ the owners and the public will be able to watch the horses in the trial and see for themselves.”
There will be five horses running – four colts and a filly – and the jockeys will be wearing the owners’ respective racing silks.
Devonne Govender will call the race and Van Zyl has asked all of the riders to provide a comment to the press after the trial.
The triallists are Prince Of Tides (Duke Of Marmalade colt), Quantifier (Querari colt), Golden Peace (Gold Standard gelding), Copper View (Global View filly) and Wylie Riley (Wyle Hall gelding).
The males will be carrying 58kg and the filly 56kg.
The excercise will also allow the youngsters to experience the racecourse and starting stalls, in a live racing situation.
Van Zyl said: “If they are too green I will give them a second barrier trial. I am grateful that Gold Circle obliged and I think this provides a wonderful opportunity for the public and the owners to assess the horses before they go to the races.”
