The KZN Breeders Club have raised the bar and shown again that nothing beats a dollop of innovation and some broad thinking out of the box. Their superb raceday at Clairwood on Sunday provided a major confidence booster on the eve of this weekend’s KZN Yearling Sale.
The KZN Breeders meeting featured the KZN Breeders Million Mile and seven other races worth R200 000 each, which were open to horses of all ages registered with the KZN Breeders Club.
The feature event produced an exciting finish with the Mullins Bay gelding Gitiano scoring a great win and holding off the son of Cataloochee, Corredor.
Des Egdes’ Bezrin colt Coy Boy ran third.
The support races were sponsored by The Fort Stud, Midlands Thoroughbreds, Kinmount Stud, Roski Stud, Backworth Stud, Middlefield Stud and Summerhill Stud.
The concept was the brainchild of Koos De Klerk, the chairman of the KZN Breeders Club, and his board.
Winning stallions on the day were Var and King Of Kings with two winners each, Fort Wood, Miesque’s Approval, Muhtafal, Kahal, Mullins Bay and Solskjaer.
Alec Laird trained the feature winner Gitiano.
Doug Campbell, Dennis Drier, Michael Roberts and Gavin van Zyl were the KZN trainers that landed one of the R200 000 events each.
Trainers Sean Tarry, Louis Goosen and Johan Janse van Vuuren also won one R200 000 race apiece, while jockeys Anthony Delpech and Piere Strydom each rode a double.
Despite a last minute switch of venue, a large crowd attended and the entertainment areas were well patronised.
Saftote pools for the Pick 6, Place Accumulator and Jackpot all surpassed the R1 million mark.
In another marketing scoop, the KZN YEARLING SALE MILLION will be run as part of the bumper Vodacom Durban July programme this weekend. This generously endowed event is restricted to all qualifying graduates from the 2012 KZN Yearling Sale.
