Klawervlei Stud will be home to the very first son of champion Uncle Mo to stand in South Africa.
Royal Mo (Uncle Mo – Royal Irish Lass) was bred by Jim and Pam Robinson’s Brandywine Farm in Kentucky and knocked down to Jerry and Ann Moss for $300,000 by 2015 Keeneland September Sale.
Trained by John Shirreffs, the colt had a total of 6 career starts for 2 wins, 2 seconds and a third. Royal Mo scored his biggest win in the G3 Robert B Lewis Stakes, where he accounted for subsequent G2 Blue Grass Stakes winner Irap by 3.5 lengths.
The talented colt also ran third, beaten a length, in the 2017 G1 Santa Anita Derby, which was won by multiple G1 winner Gormley. Splitting the two was subsequent G1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt hero Battle Of Midway and finishing behind them were graded stakes winners Iliad, Term Of Art, and American Anthem.
Royal Mo was having his last timed workout six days ahead of his bid for the 2017 G1 Preakness Stakes when he fractured his off fore sesamoid at Pimlico on 14 May 2017. Thanks to quick thinking by Gary Stevens, who was in the irons that morning, and great work by the surgical team at New Bolton Centre, the colt was able to be saved for stud.

His sire Uncle Mo, was an unbeaten champion at two, when his wins included the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (which he won by 4.25 lengths) and the historic G1 Champagne Stakes (which Uncle Mo won by 4.75 lengths).
One of the world’s hottest young stallions, Uncle Mo has sired more than 30 stakes winners in his first three full crops to race, headed by G1 winners Nyquist, Dream Tree, Outwork, Gomo and Mo Town. Nyquist was a champion at two, won the G1 Kentucky Derby of 2016 and now stands at Darley for a fee of $40 000.
Uncle Mo stands at Ashford Stud in Kentucky for an advertised 2018 stud fee of $125 000.
Royal Mo
Royal Mo is out of Royal Irish Lass, a daughter of champion sire Saint Ballado. Royal Irish Lass, who is also the dam of stakes winning racemare Tara From The Cape, is out of the durable and talented Irish Linnet. The latter, who banked over $1 million during her career, won a remarkable 19 races during her career, headed by the G2 New York Handicap. Irish Linnet, a granddaughter of the great sire Seattle Slew, won the Yaddo Handicap an amazing five times running!
Royal Mo’s broodmare sire, Saint Ballado, was an exceptional sire and he is the damsire of more than 60 stakes winners, headed by Breeders’ Cup winner and US champion Lady Eli. (Saint Ballado’s Horse Of The Year son Saint Liam is damsire of G1 winner Sharp Azteca).
