The odds on favourite Hawksworth gave his opponents a galloping lesson in the R100 000 Kimberley Nursery run over 1400m at Flamingo Park on Monday. The result was never in doubt for Corne Spies’ charge.
With the field scratching down to ten runners and Clinton Binda providing the only apparently serious opposition from Gauteng in the form of Torero Dancer, the money came for what appeared to be the best bet of the day.
Hawksworth formed a leg of a powerful four pronged attack from the Spies yard, and as one of only four previous winners in the race, he always appeared to have the first cheque at his mercy, despite the widest of the draw.
The race went perfectly according to plan, with the runners on his inside initially giving no leeway as Fanie Chambers looked for a better position from his barrier gate jump wide out.
Into the turn Chambers took the best option available to him and grabbed the lead as they turned into the home run.
He led from his stablemate Hypodromo Da Gavea, with Rebel Assault further back.
Going through the 400m marker it was apparent that nothing could match strides with Hawskworth who went clear as the maiden filly Duchess Catherine finished with a flourish.
At the line Hawksworth held his advantage by seven lengths with the whip and the opposition unsighted. He won in a time of 87,99 secs beating Duchess Catherine who will be deep into the red next time in a maiden at this track.
Sioux She ran on best of the rest, to grab third cheque in the same silks as the winner.
Hawksworth is owned by Rob Macnab and Tobie Spies and is a son of Lecture out of the one time winning Captain Al mare, Domestic Goddess.
He was bred by Favour Stud and registered his fourth win from 8 starts, with 2 places.
He interestingly shed his maiden on the Vaal turf, so is no one trick pony as it were!
He took his earnings to R186 400
