Kenilworth Strike – Settlement Reached

Racing festival goes ahead on Friday

A strike by workers of Kenilworth Racing on Monday morning outside the Southern Suburbs racecourse came to an end with an amicable settlement having been reached and no impact of the big racing this week.

A spokesman for Cape Racing confirmed to the Sporting Post that over the past 6 months, there have been ongoing wage negotiation discussions between Cape Racing and the represented union, General Industries Workers Union of South Africa (GIWUSA).

“A settlement was not reached and a notice to strike was received on 31 December 2021. The protected strike commenced on Monday morning, 3 January 2022, with picketing outside Kenilworth Racecourse. A follow up meeting was held with GIWUSA at 10h30 the same morning at Kenilworth Racecourse and an agreement was reached with an amicable settlement. As such there will be no impact to the operations of the business and we look forward to the upcoming feature race days of the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate festival.”
