Keeping A Straight Line

5 From 14

Fairview 19th June: Favourite backers got off to a nice start in Port Elizabeth on Friday when KOLDONA did the business in the opening maiden plate over 1300m. Soon up handy, the daughter of Kildonan took up the running 200m out and went on to score with some in hand by a length and three quarters.
Four of the afternoon’s nine races were run over 1200m and the fastest of these was the MR92 Handicap won by VAUCLAIR. On leaving the stalls it was the 25/1 shot ROARING SEA who elected to make the running whilst Tara Laing’s charge was content to sit in midfield. He ran on stoutly from halfway and under a well-judged ride from Raymond Danielson he got up late to beat CAPTAIN’S RESERVE by a length and a quarter.
The fastest of the three 1600m events was the MR90 Handicap in which SAMHAAN registered his fifth career victory. Positioned at the back when the nine runners swung for home, the Encosta De Lago gelding ran on best of all and comfortably accounted for GRAND LODGE by a length and a quarter. Samhaan has gained his five wins from just 14 starts.
Titbits
SEVEN ROSES (midfield, won going away) and ELEGANT GENT (came from the rear) both ran on well when 1st & 4th respectively in the maiden plate over 1300m.

He Who Dares Wins

Greyville 19th June: The Gr2 Post Merchants over 1200m (turf) topped the bill on Friday evening and here we saw a smart performance from the Cape Town visitor DARING DAVE. Running on from midfield Justin Snaith’s charge didn’t find the clearest of passages and did well to get up in the dying strides.
The faster of the two juvenile plates (turf) that got proceedings underway was the boy’s affair won by MUWAARY. Always deep in the red, Mike De Kock’s charge raced handy. He put his head in front shortly after passing the 300m marker and drew clear easily in the closing stages of the race to score by four.
The boy’s division was the fastest of the two maiden plates over 1900m (poly) where the well-supported newcomer VARIETY ROMP did the business. Backed into 2/1 from 7/2 at the track, the son of Var was soon at the head of affairs. He was always around two lengths clear and won without any anxious moments.
Titbits
The 2yo PAIX EMBLEME came from the rear when only beaten a neck in the maiden plate over 1200m.
The winner of the girl’s division of the maiden plate over 1900m MARIAH ANN ran on well from the backend of midfield.

Shining Bright

Turffontein 20th June: They raced on the inner track on Saturday where the fastest of the four 1450m events was the MR91 Handicap won by the 3yo LIGHT THE WAY. Soon up handy despite being a little slow into stride, Robbie Sage’s charge raced prominent throughout. He was ridden to lead as they approached the 300m marker and after a thrilling tussle with the favourite SILVER SCOOTER he got the decision by a neck.
PODEROSA in the maiden plate over 1000m was the best bet on the card for most and she didn’t let down her supporters. Soon in command of a healthy advantage Dominic Zaki’s charge led throughout. She kept on strongly in the short home straight and despite losing a shoe won comfortably by a length.
The easiest victory on the card was recorded by the 3yo DEO JUVENTE in the faster of the two 1800m events, a MR86 Handicap. He ran on best of all coming off the strip and won going away by two and three quarters from another 3yo in SCENT.
Titbits
LADIES CLUB ran on well from midfield when getting up late to open her account over 1450m.
RED RAIN came from the rear when winning the MR72 Handicap.

.

Engaging Overdrive

Kenilworth 20th June: Three of the eight races on the old course on Saturday were run over 1400m and quickest home here was VICTORIOUS JAY in the boy’s maiden plate. Confidently ridden by MJ Byleveld, the 2yo son of Jay Peg ran on stoutly from midfield and won going away by two and a quarter.
In terms of distance the easiest victory on the soft going was recorded by FORWARD DRIVE in the faster of the two maiden juvenile plates over 1000m. Taken straight to the front by apprentice May, the well-supported 33/10 second favourite (op 5/1) led by just a length for first half of the race. He began to assert his authority as they approached the 400m pole and went on to score very cosily by three and a quarter.
Another to win comfortably in the maiden ranks on this card was PATRINA in the 1400m event. Always handy, Ronnie Sheehan’s charge took up the running shortly after passing the 300m marker and won well by a length and a half.
Titbits
The newcomer NIGHT IN TAHITI (33/1 into 14/1) ran on well from the rear when getting up late to win the maiden juvenile plate over 1000m.
SECRET SOCIETY came from the rear when winning the MR76 Handicap over 1200m.

The Inspiring Story Of Dr Marianne Thomson

‘I am writing this as an older, small breeder and in our language, Markus, because this is our war. If I phoned you, I’d be overwhelmed by business jargon within a minute. What makes you so angry that you don’t care what you are doing to our shaky industry? How do you deal with this in your inner, quiet self?’
