Varsfontein’s Need To Know

The Korea Cup will be run over 1800m on sand for a purse of R13 million

Varsfontein Stud-bred Need To Know is one of 16 horses entered in the inaugural Keeneland Korea Cup at Seoul Racetrack this Sunday.

The Korea Cup will be run over 1800m on sand for a purse of a billion Korean Won (approximately R13-million) and forms part of a strong international card, which also features the Keeneland Korea Sprint.

The race has attracted horses from all over the world – the UK, France, UAE, Japan and Singapore are likely to be represented.

Need To Know, trained by Ali Rashid Al Rayhi and the sole representative in the race for the UAE, was a R950,000 purchase at the 2010 Emperors Palace National 2yo Sale.

Currently owned by Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, the gelding won four times in Dubai with his victories coming from 1200m to 1600m.

A son of now-deceased sire Western Winter, a former triple champion sire in South Africa, Need To Know is out of former Equus champion mare Promisefrommyheart.

Master Of My Fate

Need To Know’s half-brother Master Of My Fate (Jet Master – Promisefrommyheart)

One of six winners for his now deceased dam, Need To Know is a half-brother to Grade 2 Premier Trophy hero and Varsfontein sire Master Of My Fate (Jet Master) and to Listed Spook Express Handicap winner Justthewayyouare (dam of the Grade 3 World Sports Betting East Cape Derby hero Captain Splendid).

This is the same family as former Horse Of The Year London News and last season’s Grade 2 Umkhomazi Stakes winner Hack Green.
