He has two rides at this Saturday’s 10th meeting where he will be riding Blunderbuss (Race 2) and In The Trenches (Race 8).

Steyn joined the SA Jockey Academy in 2001, which was the same intake as Gavin Lerena, Raymond Danielson, Muzi Yeni and Richard Fourie. A career highlight was piloting Mother Russia to her debut win for Joey Ramsden.

He has enjoyed two stints overseas previously. He went over to India for the first time in 2011 and was there for four months before fracturing his foot.

He returned to India at the end of 2013.

He has ridden between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth this season, with 10 winners to his credit. He has battled to get the quality rides though.

Stonehenge – heads the Ramdin string

Trainer Raj Ramdin has built a reputation since starting out in 1999 for being a patient conditioner. He has in fact  won the ‘Patience Award’ numerous times at the Equidor Awards. This is awarded to a trainer who managed to saddle a horse to win after it was on the brink of retirement.

His best season was in 2016 when he saddled 16 winners and 75 places from 179 runners for stakes of Rs. 4, 534,000.

His string is headed this season by former Sean Tarry feature winner Stonehenge..
