At an Inquiry held at the Durban offices of the National Horseracing Authority on 14 September 2015, Jockey K de Melo was charged with a contravention of Rules 77.1.1, read in conjunction with Rule 77.2.8, in that a urine specimen which was taken from him at the Scottsville Racecourse on 15 July 2015 disclosed upon analysis the presence of Codeine, a prohibited substance in terms of the Rules of The National Horseracing Authority.
Jockey K de Melo pleaded guilty to the charge.
The Inquiry Board accepted his plea and found him guilty as charged.
After considering all the evidence the Board imposed a suspension from riding in races for a period of 28 days, of which 14 days are suspended for a period of one year, provided that during that period, he is not found guilty of a contravention of Rule 77, which relates to banned substances.
Mr de Melo has the right of appeal against the penalty imposed
