Kannemeyer Will Bring Star Back In Summer

'He will have a break'

Dean Kannemeyer’s star 3yo Green With Envy will not line up in the R1,5 million Gr1 The HKJC Champions Cup on the final major raceday of the current season.

With declarations due on Thursday 18 July for the World Pool Gold Cup day on Sunday 28 July at Hollywoodbets Greyville, there is plenty of interest in the various championship deciders.

There are 13 entries in the mix for the Champions Cup, with Sean Tarry’s Hollywoodbets Durban July runner-up Cousin Casey drawing pole position in his quest to end the season on a high.

He will bump the Hollywoodbets Gr1 Gold Challenge winner Dave The King, and the Durban July unlucky horse, See It Again – both of them drawing wide.

Speaking to the Sporting Post on Monday afternoon, trainer Dean Kannemeyer said that in consultation with Khaya Stables Racing Manager Jehan Malherbe, a decision had been taken to give Green With Envy a break and bring him back with the L’Ormarins King’s Plate and the Cape Town Met as his Cape summer season targets.

The son of Gimmethegreenlight started favourite for the Hollywoodbets Durban July, and was beaten 2,60 lengths by Oriental Charm.

Green With Envy had ten starts in his 3yo season, winning four on the trot including the Schweppes Gr3 Politician Stakes, the SplashOut Gr1 Cape Derby, the WSB Gr2 Guineas and the Gr1 Daily News 2000.

“He has been on the go for some time and he had a tough race in the Daily News. He is a lovely horse and still maturing, and it makes sense for us to give him a break now and bring him out in the tail end of the Cape winter. The winter has been late this year, so I will keep him here at Summerveld with the sun on his back, and we will travel later than our normal routine,” added Kannemeyer, who also said that Hollywoodbets Kenilworth’s summer course run-in suited his charge perfectly.

“We saw how he needs time to unwind and he is at his best at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth. We have an exciting 4yo prospect on our hands and he will be back in the summer,” he concluded.

The final fields for the season climax at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday 28 July will be published on Thursday 18 July.
