Varsfontein’s A P Indy stallion Judpot continues to impress  and his good looking colt  Juddering Angel lowered the colours of some well-bred sorts when winning at 40-1 on a cracking debut at Kenilworth on Wednesday.

A son of one of the best bred stallions at stud in this country, the colt was ridden by Glen Hatt and is  trained by Joey Ramsden. Juddering Angel showed great maturity and obvious ability when drawing clear to beat Sunday Sun and the well backed and highly rated Matador In Red, in the Maiden Juvenile Plate over 1200m.

In an exclusive interview with the Sporting Post this morning, a thrilled Carl De Vos of Varsfontein Stud said that he believed that there was no better value offered anywhere else in the country:

“ He has made a great start and we knew that he was going to be something special. This is his first crop of 2yo’s and he has had 2 winners and 1 place from just 4 runners! That’s not half bad. We have had some of the best judges in the game giving his progeny the thumbs up and I am looking forward to the National Yearling Sales. We have 18 Judpots on offer. Come and have a look for yourself, but they will do their talking on the track!” he roared.

One of the industry’s colourful characters and a veteran breeder, De Vos said that he was also over the moon for Juddering Angel’s breeders, Dave and Sue Hudson.

The Nice-based Hudson’s familiar white and green silks have been seen on Cape racecourses for many years. They raced Juddering Angel’s dam, Where Angels Walk, who is by Saumarez.

They bought her from Lionel Cohen ‘many years ago’ and have only the one mare at Varsfontein.

“They are such lovely people and have fun on a small scale. They have been lucky and enjoy racing with Joey Ramsden. They have had their fair share of winners too,” said De Vos.

Judpot’s  sire, A P Indy, was Horse of the Year in the US, and subsequently headed the US general sires list twice.

To date, A P Indy has sired over 120 stakes winners, including a host of top-class feature race winners. He has sired such Gr1 winners as Aptitude, Bernardini, Mineshaft, Secret Status, Rags to Riches and Tempera, to name a few.

A P Indy’s leading sire sons include Pulpit, Malibu Moon, Mineshaft and Bernardini.

Judpot is out of the great racemare Miesque, whose 10 G1 wins include two scores in the Gr1 Breeders Cup Mile. Miesque produced five stakes winners, including French classic winners East of the Moon and Kingmambo. The latter, in turn, became a world leading sire of 80 stakes winners.

Judpot stands at Varsfontein for a fee of R20 000.

The value in racing often lies with discovering the gems before the whole world moves in.

Don’t miss the Judpot bus!
