JP Returns 14 August At Hollywoodbets Scottsville

Sends thanks to all the well-wishers

After making great strides in the limited time frame available to him last season, jockey JP van der Merwe had his flying start to the new term briefly stopped in its tracks at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Wednesday.

The industrious 31 year old rode in three different provinces in the first three days of the new season in a flying and committed start, but was unfortunately dislodged in the fifth race at the Durban city track on Wednesday when his mount Demigod stumbled badly shortly after the start.

After being examined and found to have suffered concussion, JP was assigned a mandatory 10 day medical suspension.

“I was actually happy to carry on riding, but Dr Pillay looked at my eyes and said I have minor concussion. I am feeling a bit sore and stiff today, but other than that I am fine and just waiting for the time to pass by so that I can get going with the new season,” an upbeat JP told the Sporting Post on Thursday.

He played a key role in his father-in-law Gavin Smith lifting the East Cape Champion trainer title last season and is clearly eager to get back in the saddle, to carry on his travelling and opening up doors.

“I have always been determined to work hard and do well, so I didn’t exactly need this break. But I will stay positive and bounce back. I must say a massive word of thanks to all the people who have sent me wishes. The kindness has been unbelievable. I will be back at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on Sunday 14 August,” he added, confirming that he is available for rides and his agent Simon Zackey can be contacted. JP rides at 52kgs.

The Johannesburg-born jockey rode his first winner on Regent’s Honour for trainer Bennett Bulana on 26 October 2008 at Clairwood Park.

While he is surprisingly not sponsored, the quietly-spoken rider is determined to make it his biggest season yet.
