In a shocking report that has just reached our offices, we have learnt that two jockeys that participated in today’s Flamingo Park Racemeeting were involved in an accident near Hoopstad when returning home this evening.
Reliable sources indicate that the most likely cause of the accident is a large pothole, that caused a loss control of the vehicle. The details regarding the condition of both JP Van Der Merwe and Ryan Curling are still fairly vague at this point, but both appear out of danger.
While the two jockeys were travelling together and alone, it is unclear at this stage who owns the vehicle.
A family member told the Sporting Post that Ryan is in ICU with an eye injury. His eye is still too swollen to ascertain the extent of the injury but his condition is stable. JP is suffering concussion and has cuts and abrasions to his head, chin and chest.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the young men and their families and this article will be updated as and when further news comes to hand.
