Jockey Protest – Hollywoodbets Durban July Meeting Abandoned

Races 10,11,12 abandoned

An unprecedented jockey protest in regard to the absence of safety in respect of an inability to guarantee lights, led to the sad abandonment of the final three races on the bumper Hollywoodbets Durban July card.

While the 127th renewal of Africa’s Greatest Race at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday produced a memorable day of firsts, with the Drakenstein raced and bred Winchester Mansion winning a cracker, the meeting ended on an unfortunate note for a record crowd and racing fans countrywide.

The City Of Durban apparently breached a commitment to the sponsors and hosts, and implemented load-shedding at 18h00, just as the runners for the tenth race had been despatched.

The lights came back on after twenty minutes and then went off again. There was a lengthy delay as the lights were rebooted.

The Sporting Post is awaiting an official response from Gold Circle.
