Jock Strike Could Get Cat O’Clock Ticking Today

First due off @ 12h15

An eight-race programme has been carded at the Vaal this afternoon with the first due off at 12h15 and the lucky last scheduled for 16h25.

Gavin Lerena chats to Anthony Delpech at Hollywoodbets Greyville recently – the form jockey could enjoy a good day at Vaal (Pic – Candiese Lenferna)

The top three riders on the national jockey log take rides today, with Muzi Yeni riding five, while Gavin Lerena and Craig Zackey have four rides each.

Yeni currently leads the table with 56 winners at a strike rate of 16,5%. Gavin Lerena is 13 behind on 43, and has the most impressive strike rate at 26,7%.

Craig Zackey is only two winners behind Lerena in third, with a strike rate of 15,3%.

While the championship race is wide open, Lerena could add to his tally in the opener today when he steps in as something of a ‘jockey strike’ and partners the consistent Rafeef filly Cat O’ Clock for Tony Peter.

The 4yo has decent course and distance collateral and probably just needs a bit of luck to shed her maiden. She is no rent money kind of bet, though!

Her danger is the 3yo Miss Lia from the Paul Matchett stable.

She has produced two good runs to date and challenged strongly in both those efforts.

The daughter of Talk Of The Town returns from a 13-week break, during which time she would have strengthened up.

If not in need of this outing, she should fight it out with the year older Cat’O Clock.

Lerena also has realistic winning chances on his other three rides in Godspeed (Race 3), Ambitious Lady (Race 4) and Moola Man (Race 6)
