Even though Joao Moreira’s treble of winners on Sunday took him to 80 wins on the Hong Kong Jockey Championship table, there was still a theoretical chance that incumbent champion Zac Purton could claw back the sizeable 25 point lead of the Magic Man, given there were 45 meetings yet to be held for the competition.
Heading into Wednesday night’s meeting at Happy Valley, Purton told scmp.com, “Joao has had all the support so far this season. He’s been riding for all the stables that have been on fire this season and he has been able to make the most of those opportunities. He’s got a nice gap and I’d prefer to be in his position.”
Despite riding Happy Valley sprint specialist Grateful Heart and Classic Posh to victory last night, Purton could only look on as Moreira racked up another quartet to make the margin 27.
Moreira started the new period in Hong Kong and has continued to pile on the agony like a Might and Power. If he continues the trend for the next 44 meetings, his winning margin could turn into a record-setting rout.
