Following jockey Jarred Samuel’s fall from Fly Away With Me in the 4th race at Greyville on 4 December 2015, he was admitted to St Augustine’s Hospital in Durban.
On Monday, 14 December 2015, a little over a week after the accident occurred, Jarred was discharged to recuperate at home. However, after being disoriented and complaining of pain, his family took him to another medical facility for a second opinion.
Following additional x-rays and CT scans, Jarred was readmitted to a medical facility close to home, where he has been monitored and receiving treatment ever since.
Speaking from his bedside, girlfriend Trisha Dhipnaraim confirmed that Jarred is still “confused and not himself as yet” with medical staff predicting that it will be 2 to 3 months before he will be able to return to work.
While injury is part and parcel of the job, Trisha and the family are staying positive. “While it’s hard to see him like this, things could have been a lot worse and we are just so grateful that he is alive and getting better. His short-term memory has been affected, so visitors are being restricted so that we can keep him calm, but we are all here to support him. He is going to be OK, it’s just a question of time.”
The NHA ruled earlier this week that the accident had been dealt with satisfactorily.
As the public has expressed concerns regarding medical fees and compensation for loss of earnings, Trisha confirmed that Jarred has good medical aid and insurance cover, adding “Thank you all for the love, support and prayers. Please continue keeping him in your prayers.”
