Inquiry: Trainer Van Zyl Fined

INQUIRY – TRAINER G H VAN ZYL

The National Horseracing Authority confirms that an Inquiry held at its Durban offices on 27 October 2011, and concluded at Scottsville Racecourse on 6 December 2011,

Trainer Gavin van Zyl was charged with a contravention of Rule 73.2.4 in that he, as the Trainer and the person responsible for the horse RILEY’S STAR at the time when a urine specimen taken from the horse, after having participated in and won the 5th Race at Scottsville Racecourse on 22 June 2011 disclosed upon analysis the presence of Methylprednisilone, which is a prohibited substance in terms of the Rules of The National Horseracing Authority.

Trainer van Zyl pleaded guilty to and was found guilty of the charge.

The Inquiry Board having considered that this was Mr van Zyl’s third contravention of Rule 73.2.4 and having heard evidence from Mr van Zyl and his Veterinary Surgeon who had treated RILEY’S STAR, imposed a fine of R110 000,00.

Furthermore, in terms of Rule 72.3.2 RILEY’S STAR was disqualified from the race and the provisions of Rule 67.7.8 shall apply.
