With the entire country and most spectator sports, including horseracing, walking a tight-rope of Covid-19 uncertainty, it is comforting to note that the National Horseracing Authority are watching the processes closely, and flexed their muscles at the Vaal on Saturday.
On-course attendance at horseracing is currently proceeding throughout the country, with 4Racing jurisdictions requiring confirmation of full vaccination before permitting access.
Prior to Saturday’s Grand Heritage Day meeting at the Vaal, the NHA raised official concerns regarding the Covid vaccination checkpoint and multiple racecourse entrances.
It is reported that 4Racing has undertaken to address these concerns with their security department on Monday.
The Sporting Post has received a mixed bag of comments, and besides the fact that many people were initially outraged at the vaccination requirement, it has also been argued that the racing authorities were largely going through the motions.
Given the fact that Cape Racing, as the first to launch the new control measures, were given very short notice of the vaccination implementation on 20 November, it is hardly surprising that there are practical issues encompassing the new control mechanics over the public, operator and stable staff, as well as licence holders.
There has been no firm news yet about any pending family meeting to be hosted by President Cyril Ramaphosa, although with a public holiday looming on Thursday, and millions of South Africans travelling for the festive season, who knows what lies ahead.
