The Pretty Polly Stakes for two-year-old fillies over 1100m produced a surprise result when 25/1 chance Sheztheclubqueen – unplaced in her two previous starts – quickened the best on the soft ground to land the spoils.
The Jacaranda Handicap for fillies and mares over 1800m was dominated by horses carrying the colours of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum and trained by Mike de Kock. They filled the first two places, with Fisani running out a very comfortable winner at the expense of stable companion Alderry
The Protea Stakes for two-year-olds over 1100m was won impressively by Australian-bred Delago Deluxe, who started as the 22/10 favourite in a field of 12 after making mincemeat of maiden rivals on his sole previous appearance over 1200m at the Vaal in February.
Wide-margin winners were the order of the day in several of the eight Feature events on a soggy Turffontein track and the Man O’ War Sprint for three-year-olds over 1100m was no exception.
2010 SA Oaks heroine Arcola bounced back to form in no uncertain style with an easy victory in the Caradoc Gold Cup over 2850m, a race which was run on very soft ground and which proved to be a very considerable test of stamina.

Mike de Kock always looked to hold a powerful hand in the Gauteng Guineas and took away almost three-quarters of the million rand stake on offer when stable companions Link Man and Kavanagh captured the first two places.
It is eerie to think that there would have been no Siren’s Call, Sound Of Warning, or for that matter Call To Unite, had fate not decreed that Enchanted Cove follow her dam to South Africa, and that Peter de Beyer had the foresight to return Elusive Fort back home from the States as well!
