SA Title: Fourie At 2000-1

Hewitson holds big lead

Champion apprentice Lyle Hewitson, who registered his first Gr1 victory at Greyville on Saturday when Undercover Agent won the Gr1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge, has firmed to 1-100 with Hollywood in the betting for the SA Champion Jockey title.

Muzi Yeni is next best at 14-1, with Callan Murray at 50-1.

For the optimists, Richard Fourie and Aldo Domeyer are at 2000-1!

The Avontuur sponsored Hewitson, who rode his 161st winner on Rebel’s Champ as part of Paul Peter’s glorious Turffontein Jackpot clean sweep on Thursday, is 34 wins ahead of Winning Form’s Yeni (127), with the Chrigor Stud flagbrearer Richard Fourie on 108 winners. The indisposed Anthony Delpech has maintained second but will not ride again this term.

There are 7 weeks left of the current season and taking the 2000-1 about Fourie may be a shot in the dark. Of some comfort will be that in the top three, the Cape-based rider has the highest win strike rate (19%) versus Hewitson’s 12% and Yeni’s 10%.

If the 1-100 about Hewitson or the 2000-1 on Fourie doesn’t grab you, what about the 5000-1 about Piere Strydom. The veteran, who made a winning comeback on Sunday aftera  month, showed his determination with a har-trick of winners for Paul Peter at Turffontein on Thursday.

The multiple SA Champion is on 59 winners and has a major backlog after a disrupted season,
