Hello Joburg, Hello

What A Winter mare's top-class return run

Returning from a break of 21 weeks, former Cape-based mare Hello Winter Hello looked like she had been parachuted into the Listed Gardenia Stakes at the 200m as she scorched to a resounding victory at Turffontein on Saturday.

Having her first start for Johan Janse van Vuuren, the What A Winter daughter now races in the interests of father-son duo of Lawrence and Jarryd Wernars and Harry Wilson, and showed she is more than value for the R275 000 paid for her by Vermaak Equine when offered on the CTS Select Fillies For Stud Online Sale in July

Starting at 10-1, Hello Winter Hello, already a dual stakes winner,  bounded clear in the final stages of the 1000m feature to beat Corne Spies’ gallant Singforafa (16-1) by 2 lengths in a time of 57,23 secs.

The lightly-raced 3yo Lucy English (2-1) was not disgraced a half length back in third.

Interestingly, it was almost a year ago to the day that Hello Winter Hello had won the Listed Laisserfaire Stakes for her former conditioner Adam Marcus and owners Danny and Ronel Collins at Kenilworth.

This was the in-form Warren Kennedy’s third winner of the day.

Hello Winter Hello, originally purchased R140 000 as a weanling from the 2017 CTS Select Mares Weanlings & Fillies for Stud Sale, was bred by Favour Stud.

She is a daughter of Drakenstein’s triple Equus Champion What A Winter (Western Winter) and is out of the Dominion Royale mare I’m Like Hello.

Hello Winter Hello has won 5 races with 7 places from 16 starts for stakes of R384 675.
