Turffontein Off – Hawwaam Plans Change

Star could be at Kenilworth on 14 December

Mike de Kock’s programme for Sun Met favourite Hawwaam will now likely shift to plan B after the abandonment of today’s Turffontein meeting.

Following gallops and a track inspection by Jockeys, NHRA officials, Trainers and Phumelela track management, the unanimous decision was taken to abandon today’s race meeting.

Hawwaam was to have lined up in a Pinnacle Stakes today, before contesting the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate and the Sun Met, prior to export to Australia.

De Kock told the Sporting Post earlier this week that if today’s run was lost, he would consider running the son of Silvano in the Gr2 Green Point Stakes on Saturday 14 December at Kenilworth.

That mile contest declares today at 11h00.

At present there is an equine travel ban from Johannesburg to Cape Town due to an African Horse Sickness case within a 30km radius of Randjesfontein but the ban is expected to be lifted on Tuesday 10 December.

That would give the team five days to travel to the Mother City for the Green Point Stakes. While not ideal, this is certainly a boon for Kenilworth Racing who host the Cape Fillies Guineas on the same afternoon.

The Green Point Stakes field will be published later.
