Handicapped To Score

Sean’s One Two

Fairview 25th October: The Gr3 Algoa Cup over 2000m topped the bill in Port Elizabeth on Sunday and here the first two places was filled by the visiting stable of Sean Tarry. The nibbled at winner STONEHENGE set the pace whilst his more fancied stable companion ORCHESTRATED was content to race in the backend of midfield. Orchestrated ran on best of all over the final 400m and it was only by the narrowest of margins that his stable companion held on.
Five of the afternoon’s nine races were run over 1200m and quickest home amongst these was SILENT RUSH in the MR83 Handicap. Freely available at 33/1 on the off, the unfancied daughter of Windrush could be sighted at the back early on. She ran on best of all from halfway and in what proved to be a real thriller she got up in the very last stride to deny the joint favourite SHAUNTREL.
Surprisingly the faster of the two 1600m events was the MR68 Handicap won by ELYSIAN PARK. Positioned in midfield turning for home, Mike Bass’ charge ran on best of all in the straight and after striking the front 450m from home, he cruised clear to score by four and a quarter.
The stable of Mike Bass were also on the mark in the MR85 Handicap over 1800m when AIR CHIEF MARSHAL registered his third career victory. Sent off an uneasy favourite at 28/10, the son of Jet Master was always handy. He put his head in front as they approached the 300m marker and in a thrilling three way finish he only got the verdict by the narrowest of margins over the second favourite CATSIDE SLEW.
Titbits
The newcomer WELSH EMPEROR ran on well from off the pace when a three quarter length runner up in the maiden plate over 1200m.

Doing The Business

Kenilworth 28th October: A maiden plate over 1200m got proceedings underway in Cape Town on Wednesday and in what proved to be a real thriller victory here went to the newcomer KEEP ON CHOOGLIN. Allowed to drift as if having lost a leg at the track (10/1 out to 40/1), Andre Nel’s charge raced in midfield early on. He ran on stoutly over the final 400m and with the rest well beaten he got the better of a three way finish by the narrowest of margins.
There were three races run over 1200m in total and the fastest of these was the MR92 Handicap won by the well supported CRYSTAL CAVERN. On leaving the stalls it was HOT AFFAIR who elected to make the running, whilst racing over a trip short of her best, the daughter of Horse Chestnut raced detached at the rear. Just seven had gone to post though and once given rein she quickly got on terms. She struck the front going through the 200m and won going away by a length and a quarter.
Four of the afternoon’s nine races were staged over 1600m and quickest home amongst these was WAITY KATIE in the MR71 Handicap. Sent off a rather uneasy favourite at 22/10, Mike Bass’ charge was always in touch with the leaders. She made her move as they approached the 300m marker and won well by three quarters from the running on SPEEDY CHESTNUT.
Race five on the card was a maiden plate for the boys over 1600m and all the rage here was the Justin Snaith trained BLACK ARTHUR. Backed into odds on at the track, the Silvano colt raced towards the rear during the early part of the race. He quickened in good style after having to switch for a run 300m out, and won going away by a length and a quarter after striking the front 50m or so from home.
Titbits
FEAR NOT followed up on her third placing in stronger company last time out with a comfortable victory in the MR90 Handicap over 1600m.

The Final Curtain

Vaal 29th October: The final meeting on the sand track took place on Thursday. As per usual there were a number of very easy victories, but none more so than that of the supported CASH IN CAMILLA when opening her account in the maiden plate over 1200m. Backed into 5/2 second favourite from 5/1 at the track, Roy Magner’s charge was soon at the head of affairs. She was three and a half lengths clear going through the 400m and with a ton in hand she cruised clear to score by fourteen.
Another to win with lengths to spare was ROMAN CARNIVAL when landing the bill topping pinnacle stakes over 1200m. Soon up handy, the Windrush gelding asserted his authority shortly after passing the 400m pole and with plenty in hand he went on to score by five and three quarters.
A MR65 Handicap over 1450m brought the curtain down and perhaps fittingly the race was won by a stable who have had many successes on the sand in St John Gray. His runner here DE LA VERE ran on well from his handy position and won going away by three and three quarters.
Titbits
Having only his second career outing here, LEIGH WOODS won the maiden plate over 1200m very comfortably by three and a quarter.

More To Come

Greyville 30th October: They raced on the poly track on Friday evening where the fastest of the three races over 1200m, a MR66 Handicap, was won by the top weight TRIPTRONIC. In the rear turning for home, the 8/1 shot ran on best of all in the short home straight and won going away by two and a quarter after striking the front 100m out.
Four of the eight races were run over 1600m and quickest home amongst these was NICKLAUS when registering his third career victory in the MR74 Handicap. Supported into 4/1 in the betting market, Duncan Howells’ charge was soon up handy. He was ridden to lead as they approached the 300m marker and had enough in hand to deny the luckless favourite LAST TIGER by three quarters. Running on from midfield, Dean Kannemeyer’s charge was baulked for a run 400m out and didn’t find the clearest of passages thereafter.
The remaining race was a MR66 Handicap over 1000m and here the veteran mare QUINTELLA gained just reward for her recent consistency. On leaving the stalls it was MARIA ESTELLA who elected to make the running whilst Pat Lunn’s charge raced in midfield. She ran on stoutly over the final 400m and under a well-judged ride from Keagan De Melo, she got up late to beat JOLO by a length.
Titbits
NOORDHOEK ICE (midfield) and SUZIE’S ARROW (rear), both ran on well when 1st & 2nd respectively in the maiden plate over 1600m.

The Inspiring Story Of Dr Marianne Thomson

‘I am writing this as an older, small breeder and in our language, Markus, because this is our war. If I phoned you, I’d be overwhelmed by business jargon within a minute. What makes you so angry that you don’t care what you are doing to our shaky industry? How do you deal with this in your inner, quiet self?’
