Greg’s On A Busman’s Holiday

Former East Cape champion makes fleeting appearance

A familiar name from the recent past has cropped up in Friday’s Fairview racecard and the Hollywoodbets Kenilworth Saturday card.

It’s good to see ten-times East Cape Champion jockey Greg Cheyne back on his old stomping ground for former boss, Alan Greeff, and in his adoptive home town of Cape Town.

The Gr1 winning multiple regional champion emigrated to the UK with his wife Claire in July 2022 and are both employed at William Haggas’s Somerville Lodge Stables in the heart of Newmarket.

Greg told the Sporting Post on Thursday that he was on a busman’s holiday and would be flying back to England on Friday 8 December.

“I’m enjoying the beautiful sunshine and playing lots of golf, while catching up with friends in Gqeberha and Cape Town. I am also keen to see the new developments at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth,” he added.

Greg takes six rides for the Greeff yard at Fairview and then has five rides for a variety of stables down at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday.

The Pretoria-born 47 year old, who has ridden over 2300 winners across the world, joined the SA Jockey Academy in 1991 alongside the now late Alec Forbes, Marcus Samuel and Paul Devlin.

A Durban July and Met winner, he has also ridden in Zimbabwe, Mauritius, Germany, Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Macau, winning the Gr1 Malaysia Sprint and the Malaysian International Jockeys Challenge.

The Fairview first race is off at 12h30.

Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday gets underway at 11h40.
