Newsflash – Cheyne Hospitalised

Joins Jarred Samuel, Donavan Mansour and Charles Ndlovu on growing injury list

Avontuur-sponsored Cape champion jockey Greg Cheyne is the latest addition to the casualty list of local riders after he broke a foot  in three places when his mount reared and unseated him in the first race at Kenilworth on Sunday.

He joins Jarred Samuel, Charles Ndlovu and Donavan Mansour on the sick list

Cheyne was riding the fancied 2yo Mount Keith, when the Glen Kotzen-trained colt dropped the 39 year old Cape-based jockey.

He was rushed to hospital after being stabilised at the start by the on-course medical personnel. Delays were kept to a minimum and the 4×4 ambulance was despatched to the start to cover the first race, while Cheyne was whisked away.

X-rays revealed that he had suffered a triple break and the presence of bone fragments has led to him being admitted overnight by the attending doctor.

He will be going for a CT scan this week to determine the road forward in terms of corrective surgery.

Third on the SA jockeys’ log last season,  the three-times East Cape champion jockey made his International Jockeys Challenge debut last month.

Cheyne has won six Gr1 races in South Africa, including the Mercury Sprint on Captain Of All last term, as well as the 2009 Vodacom Durban July on Big City Life, and the 2008 Gold Cup on Desert Links.

He has ridden in Zimbabwe, Mauritius, Germany, Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Macau, winning the Gr1 Malaysia Sprint and the Malaysian International Jockeys Challenge.

We wish him a speedy recovery.
