Cape-based jockey Greg Cheyne, who is enjoying one of the best seasons of his career, flew to Malaysia via Singapore on Tuesday. He has 12 rides on the Selangor Turf Club double header this weekend, including Mystic Power in the Gr1 Gold Cup.

Currently riding high at fifth on the SA national jockey log, Cheyne was granted a visiting contract by the Selangor Turf Club for 2015. He has had great success in the region and won the International Jockey Challenge there in 2013.

He has twelve rides this weekend, which includes Mystic Power in Sunday’s Gr1 Gold Cup, the first leg of the Triple Crown. He has won twice on this talented horse, including a memorable victory in the 2013 Magic Millions Classic.

Local champion Silvestre de Sousa and former Cape jockey Martin Wepner are amongst his internationally flavoured opposition.

Cheyne, whose wife Claire stayed behind in Cape Town to ‘hold the fort’, was accompanied by his golf clubs and he said that he was looking forward to spending a few days with his friends Barend and Nicky Vorster in Singapore. He also expected to spend some time with Pat and Wendy Shaw.

“I fly to Malaysia on Saturday morning. The hospitality is outstanding and I once again must say a huge thank-you to the Selangor Turf Club for hosting me and for the wonderful opportunity to ride in Malaysia. And of course it’s the year of the goat and the Chinese New Year celebrations will add plenty of atmosphere to the racing.”
