World Record For Cape Jock?

A unique achievement?

Grant van Niekerk

Grant Van Niekerk – world famous!

Cape-based Jockey Grant Van Niekerk may have ridden his way into the Guinness Book of Records at Durbanville on Saturday.

Reports to the Sporting Post suggest that he is only the second jockey ever to be involved in two dead-heats on the same day.

The other rider was Jose Calo, who achieved the feat on November 12 1997 at Beulah Park Ohio.

Van Niekerk dead-heated for third on Stan Elley’s grey Pecan Nut in the sixth race and in the very next race tied for first on Carl Burger’s Chrisaldame, who couldn’t be separated from Joey Ramsden’s Swannee Rose (Ossie Noach).

What makes Grant’s performance unique is that both his mounts were in the same silks – the dayglo yellow of owner Braam Van Huyssteen.

Any thoughts – and should Braam also claim an entry?

The Inspiring Story Of Dr Marianne Thomson

‘I am writing this as an older, small breeder and in our language, Markus, because this is our war. If I phoned you, I’d be overwhelmed by business jargon within a minute. What makes you so angry that you don’t care what you are doing to our shaky industry? How do you deal with this in your inner, quiet self?’
