The race has a historical connection with the Cape.

Kiora, who ran in 1904, was in a shipwreck off the Cape Town coast in 1899 and was rescued after being found alive perched on a rock.

Did you know?

Aintree racecourse is named after an ancient Viking settlement, where every tree was felled apart from one, giving the name “Ain Tree”.

A record 66 horses lined up in 1929 but the 1883 race attracted a mere 10 starters.

Mr Frisk (1990) is the fastest horse to complete the race, getting round in 8min 47.8s.

The greatest number of horses to finish was 23 in 1984 when Hallo Dandy won.

Red Rum is the most successful horse, winning the National three times – in 1973, 1974 and 1977.

Runners jump 30 fences over 4 miles, 2 furlongs and 74 yards.

The Chair is the tallest fence at 5ft 2in and the broadest. This was so named as it was once alongside the seat used by the distance judge.

The late Dick Saunders is the oldest rider to win the National on Grittar in 1982 when he was 48. Bruce Hobbs was the youngest to win, aged 17, in 1938.
