The superfast Captain Al filly Carry On Alice rounded off a famous feature foursome for Sean Tarry at Turffontein on Saturday when she was never headed to win the R250 000 Gr3 Man O’War Sprint run over 1100m.

The victory gave log-leading current SA champion jockey S’manga Khumalo a hat-trick of wins on the eight race feature menu.

It looked difficult to oppose the classy flyer and former Gr1 SA Nursery winner  in the ten horse field and she showed no ill-effects after her unplaced run in the Gr1 Majorca Stakes on J&B Met day.

Flashing the toe back on home turf after an eight week break, Carry On Alice was never in danger of being overhauled and went all the way in 63,70 secs to beat the late-flying Doing It For Dan by 1,25 lengths.

The Antonius Pius colt Belong To Me is a decent sprinter and he grabbed third after trying hard to get to the leader in the final 400m.

There were a few out of sorts  runners in the race as evidenced by this note from the stipes.

Excerpt from Stipes Report:

  1. a) In view of the performance from PRECURSOR (A Marcus) (14.00 lengths, betting 11/2), the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this colt.
  2. b) Jockey S Brown reported that he felt something amiss with VARBRATION in running. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this gelding.  VARBRATION shifted out away from the crop and had to be straightened at the 300m.
  3. c) Jockey I Sturgeon reported that AMAZING STRIKE made an abnormal respiratory noise in running. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this gelding.
  4. d) KOSTYA ZU (M Yeni) took an awkward stride at the 200m.
  5. e) CARRY ON ALICE (S Khumalo), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer S G Tarry advised. (GT)
  6. f) DOING IT FOR DAN (P Strydom), placed second, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer L W Goosen advised. (SW)

THE VETERINARY SURGEON REPORTED:

  1. a) PRECURSOR – not striding out right front.
  2. b) VARBRATION – fatigued.
  3. c) AMAZING STRIKE – no respiratory noise detected post race.

Carry On Alice was bred by Klawervlei Stud from Captain Al out of the four time winning Western Winter mare, Carry On Katie.

She sold for R475 000 on the Cape Premier Yearling Sale Book 1 and races in the interests of Chris Van Niekerk, Dr J Warner and her breeders.

Carry On Alice has now won 4 from 12 starts with 6 places and R1 323 125 in stakes.

She looks on target for the big Scottsville sprint day in May.
