Fairview trainer Yvette Bremner pulled off another of her away game giantkilling acts when her super-fast 4yo Princess Rebel ran her high-class opposition off their feet to win the R400 000 Gr2 Southern Cross Stakes at Kenilworth on Saturday.
Holidaying in Hong Kong at the Longines International Races, Yvette and her partner and major owner Hedley McGrath, and their daughter Kayla, shouted Princess Rebel home from 12000km away – and it was no sweat at all.
Having her first start away from her Windy City home base, Princess Rebel was tuned to the minute by assistant trainer Carl Hewitson – who a quarter of a century earlier had booted home many winners at Kenilworth – and piloted by his SA Champion Jockey son Lyle.
The flying filly demonstrated that a date at Scottsville in May for the SA Fillies Sprint may well be on the radar.
She ground her opponents into the lush green Kenilworth strip to beat promising 3yo Nous Voila by 2,25 lengths in a time of 58.25 secs.
The runner-up’s stablemate Freedom Charter was 0,30 lengths away in third, with Canukeepitsecret running a nice race to finish fourth.
The Favour Stud bred Princess Rebel is a daughter of Rebel King (National Emblem) out of the 4 time winning Waldoboro mare, First Wave.
She has won 6 races with 3 places from 9 starts for stakes of R569 325.
Owned by Yvette and Hedley in partnership with Mark Wright, Princess Rebel was bought back for R90 000 by her breeders Favour Stud off the 2016 CTS March Yearling Sale.
