Flower Alley son wins the Gr2 Peninsula Handicap

Candice Bass-Robinson made it three feature winners from four races when the 4yo Firealley finished with a wet sail under his handy galloping weight to win the R200 000 Gr2 Peninsula Handicap at Kenilworth on Saturday.

A winner of three of his last four starts, Firealley has come into his own as a 4yo, and could well have earned a consideration for a Met entry after winning in really good style under Greg Cheyne.

The East Cape Champion jockey had his mount tracking the free-striding Rockin’ Ringo and he was unleashed at the 300m. The two kept the race to themselves as Firealley (8-1) charged away to beat Rocking’ Ringo (25-1) by 2,25 lengths in a time of 110,89 secs.

Super Silvano (8-1) came out the pack to run third a length back, with Native Tongue (12-1) three quarters of a length away in fourth.

The disappointment of the race was the 5-2 favourite Hoedspruit, who ran out of the money.

A Drakenstein Stud-bred son of Flower Alley (Distorted Humor), Firealley is out of the Irish-bred Galileo mare, Fire Spinner.

He races in the purple and green of Fiona Carmichael’s Westward Bloodstock signed the cheque at R275 000 at the Cape Premier Yearling Sale.

Firealley has won 4 races with 9 places from 19 starts for stakes of R375 250.
