Peter Galloper’s Burning To Earn

No stopping powerful front-runner under 52kgs

Elusive Fort’s smart daughter Big Burn broke her stakes ice and went gun to tape to win the weather-delayed R200 000 Gr2 Joburg Spring F&M Challenge on soft ground at Turffontein on Sunday.

Receiving weight all round in the weight-for-age plus penalties 1450m feature, the Narrow Creek Stud product is difficult to peg back when flying in front and she stepped up to the more testing trip on the inside track to provide a galloping lesson to her five rivals.

Unbeaten in three starts this term, the Paul Peter-trained Big Burn (3-1) ran on powerfully to beat the 5-10 Under Your Spell (who gave her 2kgs) by 1,60 lengths in a time of 90,88 secs.

Thumbs Up (20-1) was staying on without threatening for third, a half length back.

The winner is a full sister to last season’s classic performer Catch Twentytwo and looks headed for a very promising career.

Big Burn cost R300 000 at the BSA National 2yo Sale and took her career tally to 4 wins and a place from 5 starts for earnings of R544 250.

With the news of the departure of regular commentator Alistair Cohen to Dubai, Clyde Basel produced a polished comeback performance to call this race. Apparently he and Nico Kritsiotis will assist new man Brandon Bailey.
