It has been a long time between drinks for the Go Deputy filly Flying Ice. Throw in the curved ball of the R400 000 Gr2 Gold Bracelet being switched from the turf to the polytrack at the last moment and her outstanding win at Greyville on Sunday just looks all the more impressive.
It has been a terrific season for Lammerskraal’s anchor man Go Deputy and the Triple Crown winner producing son of Deputy Minister celebrated another impressive stakes winner in the form of the very capable Flying Ice.
Often placed at feature level, Flying Ice had to be a serious contender and looked to be better than her form of a Listed win way back in June 2015.
She formed part of a three-way Neil Bruss coupling and will be fondly remembered as the seasoned horseman’s final winner.
After 44 years of training horses, Bruss is off to pursue a stint in Saudi Arabia and enjoyed a great weekend – training the final winner of the Cape season just 24 hours earlier.
Relaxed some eight lengths off the pace, the 9-1 Flying Ice was produced through a gap by the bang in-form Anthony Delpech and she stretched clear to hold the much vaunted favourite Nightingale to 2,75 lengths.
The winner’s time was 123,35 secs.
Nightingale held off the winner’s consistent stablemate Deputy Ryder by 0,75 lengths, with Patchit Up Baby making up plenty of ground from way back to grab fourth.
Ian Sturgeon replaced Piere Strydom on the smart Olma, who had looked dangerous turning for home.
The daughter of Dynasty hit a brick wall to run a disappointing race.
Flying Ice made it 3 wins with 6 places from 12 starts and took her stakes to R605 625.
She was a R125 000 BSA National Yearling Sale R125 000 purchase.
The Lammerskraal Stud-bred Flying Ice is a daughter of Go Deputy out of the twice winning Western Winter mare, Strawberry Ice.
The Greyville track was again the subject of much unhappiness amongst the jockeys and at the end of the day they are to be commended for soldiering on – and thankfully we lost only two scheduled turf races to a surface switch.
