Bright New Star Emerges

Emotional win for Fastnet Rock colt

Prince Fawaz emerged as one of the new stars of Australian racing with a brilliant win in Saturday’s Gr1 Magic Millions JJ Atkins Plate run over a mile at Eagle Farm.

Sent out the second favourite with punters after a brilliant last start win in Sydney, Prince Fawaz surged home late to reel in the previously unbeaten Kubrick with a powerful finish.

The youngster by Fastnet Rock was a $220,000 purchase for trainer Anthony Cummings at the 2018 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from Baramul Stud.

Connections think whatever Prince Fawaz is doing at two is a bonus as they feel he will be a better horse when he gets to three.

“That’s the first time I’ve sat on him,” winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy stated. “He’s sure got a bit of class, that’s for sure.”

“We travelled well during the race and I thought about shouldering out near the 700 (metre mark) but I rode him a bit more patient.”

“Full credit to the horse – he picked up and he then cruised the last 100 (metres).”

“I would presume he will stay further than a mile and maybe he can get out to a Derby trip as a three-year-old,” McEvoy added.

It was an emotional win for connections including a large group of mates who joined with the Kelly and Cummings families to take ownership in Prince Fawaz.

“That one is for the big fella upstairs,” part owner Paul Pisani said. “Mark was our mate and Fawaz was his middle name.”

“Mark has a couple of great kids and a beautiful wife and this means so much. His brother is in the horse as well as so many mates.”

“We’ve been around racing for a while but this is the first one we’ve owned.”

“Anthony is a genius – also his son Edward. In life we need to have trust and we got this and it’s just amazing.”

Prince Fawaz, a son of Coolmore Stud’s champion sire Fastnet Rock, is one of two winners to date for the twice winning Testa Rossa mare Lady Paget.

Lady Paget is a daughter of the grand producer Lady Capel and is therefore a half sister to four stakes winners including Group One winning sire Casino Prince.
