Met To Gather Momentum

Final field on Wednesday

While it is difficult to gauge the level of hype or traditional ‘Met fever’ at this stage of the game, with all the other distractions at play, the R1 million Gr1 Cape Town Met should gather plenty of momentum this week with the declarations due at 11h00 on Wednesday.

The last time the Met was run for a stake of ‘just’ R1 million was from 1999, which was Horse Chestnut’s big year, through to Angus in 2003.

Flashback to 2003 – Piere Strydom and Angus win Met

It was increased to R1,5 million in 2004 when Mark Khan booted Yard-Arm home for Geoff Woodruff.

There are 21 entrants left to fill 20 berths after Justin Snaith reduced his 2021 class to just three potential runners with Nexus and Sachdev withdrawn late last week.

Snaith, in his bid to win the race for a second time,  has accepted with all of Belgarion, Do It Again and comeback kid and past Winter Series hero, African Night Sky.

Declarations close at 11h00 on Wednesday, 20 January.

Barrier Draws will be done electronically by the NRB on the same day.
