Gower – A Trip Down Memory Lane

Life Beyond The Track

Gower

Gower in retirement

The Sporting Post team are passionate about racing and we are passionate about horses.  We also love hearing from our readers and never more so than when people take the time write in and tell us about the lives of racehorses beyond the track.

To Whom It May Concern:

I was so surprised to read your “Sands of Time “article in the Sporting Post newspaper regarding September 4-10 with Gower. I am the very proud owner of Gower, he has been with me for 18 years. I bought him as a 6 year old after his racing career as my Junior horse (1996). We competed for many years and received WP colours until I went to study and put him into early retirement on our farm in Hermanus. He is living out his years as a happy old man. Attached is a picture taken today, so it seemed fitting to email you.

Kind Regards

Ed:  Gower was born in 1989 and was from the first crop of Best By Test out of Another Koo.  He was bred by Broadlands Stud, owned by Mr JM Rentzke and trained by Clodagh Shaw.  He raced for 5 seasons for 39 starts, 5 wins and 9 places, with highlights including a 3rd in the  1991 Gr3 Breeders Challenge Stakes over 1200m at Greyville, 2nd in the 1991 Listed Durban Nursery Stakes over 1000m at Greyville and 1st in the 1994 Listed Settlers Trophy over 2700m at Kenilworth.  Thank you for sharing his story with us, Christa!
