Drier flyer breaks Kenilworth 1200m course record

Dennis Drier

Dennis Drier – a great start to the Summer Of Champions

Dennis Drier opened his Cape campaign on a winning note with his Var colt Generalissimo trotting up to win a Graduation Plate over the Cape Merchants 1200m at Kenilworth this past Saturday.

It has passed with little fanfare that Generalissimo actually cracked the Kenilworth 1200m course record when clocking 69,51 secs for the trip. Previously Captain’s Lullaby (69,54 secs) and La Passionata (69,90 secs) were the fastest.

While he was assisted by an unseasonal North-westerly wind from behind, he won unextended and he must be considered a worthy holder of the ‘title’.

An interesting aside is  Captain’s Lullaby set the standard in a Novice Plate win on 2 December 2012 when beating The Which Doctor-who runs in the Cape Merchants on Sunday.

The Avontuur bred Captain’s Lullaby is a half sister, by Captain Al, to Varbration , who took on Generalissimo in a fascinating duel between two high class speedy Var 3yo’s over 1000m at Scottsville on 7 September.

Generalissimo came out tops and he looks a really exciting prospect.
