Former SA Champion Gavin Lerena is no Christmas jockey but has ridden rode 9 winners in under 7 days – including two four-timers, to take his haul to 9 .
He has ridden 55 winners at a healthy 28% strike-rate as we go to print.
Lerena, who has been riding at a consistently remarkable strike-rate since his return after a five month injury break, was signed as a retained rider by the powerful Mauritzfontein team at the end of October.
Gavin rides both Mauritzfontein and Wilgerbosdrift owned horses and says he is enjoying his riding.
He is currently in seventh position on the national log and hasn’t ever forgotten the 2012 season championship chase that went right down to the wire at Kenilworth on Tuesday 31 July. Anton Marcus won on Scaky Phane and Pirate Flag to beat him by just a solitary winner.
