A number of horses have seen their Merit Ratings adjusted after the Gauteng Guineas meeting on Wednesday 12 February,

  • Gr2 Gauteng Guineas 

IKIGAI has seen his rating climb from 114 to 118 after his fluent success in the Grade 2 Gauteng Guineas over 1600m on the Turffontein standside course. The race was postponed from the preceding Saturday because of inclement weather and unsafe conditions.

National Horseracing AuthorityThe Handicappers were of the view that the very consistent runner-up FROSTED GOLD was the right line horse to use when assessing the Guineas and, as such, his rating remains unchanged on 114.  Third placed GREEN LASER goes up from 96 to 109, while fourth finisher ASTRIX is up from 104 to 108. Also upped to 108 (from 98) is fifth placed LEOPOLD, while in the only drop made to any horse following this race EDEN ROC is down from 114 to 110.

  • Gr2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas

Unbeaten SUMMER PUDDING has had her rating increased from 110 to 114 after she recorded her fourth win from as many starts in the Grade 2 Wilgerbosdrift Fillies Guineas over 1600m.

Fourth placed MILL QUEEN was deemed to be the most suitable line horse here and accordingly she remains unchanged on 112.

Runner-up RIO’S WINTER is up from 96 to 113, while third placed VICTORIA PAIGE was raised from 107 to 112.Fifth placed MARYGOLD received a slight increase and goes from 107 to 108, while there was a similar increase for VIRTUOSA, who is up from 95 to 96.

The only other increase was for QUERARI FERRARI, who is up from 91 to 94.

A number of fillies were given a ratings drop.  KAYLA’S CHAMP goes from 108 to 107, KEEP SMILING drops from 107 to 104, SHIVERS is down to 107 from 110, SPIRITOFTHEGROOVE was trimmed from 107 to 105, MAGIC SCHOOL goes from 107 to 105, SNOW PALACE is down from 105 to 103, and lastly RISK TAKER was cut from 102 to 98.

  • Gr3 Tommy Hotspur Handicap

MR FLOOD has had his rating upped from 115 to 120 after he maintained his rich vein of form by landing the Grade 3 Tommy Hotspur Handicap over the straight 1000m course at Turffontein.

Fourth placed ROMI’S BOY was considered to make for the most suitable line horse and so his rating remains unchanged on 105.  There was also no change for third placed RIVARINE, who stays on 109, but runner-up MOMBELA was raised from 100 to 103.

There were no other increases, however, a number of horses have had their ratings reduced.  CHIEF OF STATE is down from 99 to 98, VALBONNE goes from 105 to 103, QUINLAN drops to 116 from 119, WILLIAM THE SILENT was dropped from 114 to 110, and lastly GIMME A WAVE was cut from 106 to 104.

  • Listed Wolf Power 1600 (Handicap)

SILVER GOD has had his rating raised from 100 to 105 following his success in the Listed Wolf Power 1600 (handicap) over 1600m.

The Handicappers were of the view that third placed GREEN HAZE made for the best line horse here and so his rating remains as is on 111, but runner-up D’ARRIVEE goes up from 99 to 102.

There were no other increases, but a number of ratings decreases were made. Fourth placed FULL MAST drops from 99 to 98, SOCIAL ORDER is down from 107 to 105, GREEK FIRE was cut from 100 to 107, CAPTAIN OF TORTUGA drops to 100 from 101, SHUKAMISA was dropped from 97 to 94, CARBON ATOM is down to 97 from 100, and lastly UNAGI drops from 102 to 99.
