Local trainer David Kok, who only trains about 20 horses, took out the 2nd leg of the 4yo series here in Singapore on Sunday, writes Gareth Pepper.
The horse, Well Done , who was coming into the race off the back of a commanding performance a month earlier, has long been touted as a definite chance for the Emirates Derby on 10 July.
What we saw was a performance that backed up many of the form students’ opinions that he had talent and he beat the best 4 YO horses around.
As I have mentioned before, we are blessed with talent in the trainers and jockey ranks, and his rider is no different.
His name is Glen Boss and he is of course famous for being the man that partnered Makybe Diva to all three of her Melbourne Cup victories.
The victory in Sunday’s Patrons Bowl was his 90th Group 1 success and he plans to stick around in Singapore for a few years as he has verbally stated that he cannot get decent rides in Australia.
It is most definitely our gain and he bolsters the already strong ranks of the jockeys here.
One must feel for Michael Rodd. Injured again, this is the second Gr 1 he has missed out on but knowing the star hoop, he will bounce back on his return to the saddle.
I really enjoy Joey Ramsden’s weekly contributions.
I only know JR from brief greetings in the Cape , but I can never forget an incident when he walked up to me and my ex at the races one day and greeted her and said “You can do better!”
He wasn’t wrong and a few months later we were no more and obviously she heeded his advice! That moment still brings back much laughter to me.
Joey is a super talented trainer that does not sugar coat things, as was apparent with last week’s article, who I would love to sit down with one day over one of his apparently famous roast dinners and a glass of red to hear some of his anecdotes!
This game is filled with many characters and he is most definitely one – if you are on twitter, follow him, it is one account I am really enjoying.
July, July, July!
With July fever on the up in KZN at the moment, it will be interesting to see the various schools of thought.
Piere Strydom observed on a tv clip that it was one of the most open July’s in years – which makes it all the more interesting.
The sale leading up to it as well as Phil Georgious’ famous comedy evening are lead up events that I will again miss terribly, but I will be watching the day’s proceedings with great interest here in Singapore!
Till next time.
