Sustained Effort

Fairview 21st February: They raced on the poly track on Friday where the easiest victory on the card was registered by SUSTAIN SPACE in the MR66 Handicap over 1000m. Taken straight to the front by Richard Fourie the daughter of Spectrum led throughout. She was always clear and won by three and a quarter without any anxious moments. The runner up SECRET QUEST finished well from the rear in this race.

Three of the afternoon’s nine races were run over 1200m and the fastest of these was the maiden plate won by the former Gauteng campaigner MAEVE. Always handy, the 4yo daughter of Tiger Ridge moved through to take up the running at the 200m marker and just held on by the narrowest of margins from the running on MOUCHA GASOLINA.

Race four on the card was a graduation plate over 1200m and here victory went to the Justin Snaith trained FOREST FIGHTER. Allowed to ease out to 4/1 from 3/1 favourite at the track as money in the main came for ITSGOTTOBEPERFECT (7/2 into 28/10), Forest Fighter was soon at the head of affairs. He kept on strongly at the business end of the race and just had enough in hand to beat the running on AL LUNAM by a half.

Titbits

The recent maiden winner CINDERFELLA (midfield) and VOICES OF KINGS (rear, baulked for a run twice) both ran on well when 1st & 2nd respectively in the novice plate over 1600m.

On The Hi-Way

Turffontein 22nd February: Saturday’s action took place on the inside track where we saw a very easy victory for MYWAYORTHEHIWAY in the maiden 1800m. He was a little troublesome at the start, but despite that was soon up handy. He was ridden to lead as they approached the 200m pole, and cruised clear in the closing stages of the race to score by six and a half.

Another to win well in the maiden ranks on this card was FEATHERFOOT in the 1600m event. Sent off a well supported favourite at 15/10, the lightly raced daughter of Silvano was soon positioned close to the speed. She was asked to take up the running at the top of the short home straight and comfortably accounted for the easy to back SPIAGGIA by a length and three quarters.

Somewhat unusually five of the afternoon’s ten races were run over 1800m and the fastest of these was the bill topping MR84 Handicap won by the easy to back ENCHANTED SILK. Freely available at 14/1 on the off, the lesser fancied of Sean Tarry’s two runners raced in midfield for most of the journey. Once given rein though she quickened well and under a well judged ride from Brian Nyawo she got up late to beat the more fancied FORTITUDE by three quarters.

Race four on the card was a maiden plate over 1450m and here we saw a comfortable victory for RED MARINER. Swiftly away from his pole position draw the well supported favourite was always handy. He was ridden to lead shortly after passing the 300m marker and easily accounted for the running on FACEBOOK by two.

Titbits

THE SAINT ran on well from many lengths off the pace when third in the MR68 Handicap over 1450m.

Poorly drawn CAGE FIGHTER ran on well from the rear when winning the MR72 Handicap over 1800m.

Winning Ticket

Kenilworth 22nd February: Six of the nine races in Cape Town on Saturday were run over 1200m and the fastest of these was the MR93 Handicap won by the progressive 4yo TIGER TIGER. Soon up handy, the Tiger Dance gelding raced prominent throughout. He was ridden to lead as they approached the 200m marker and kept on strongly in the closing stages of the race to beat the 3yo SAIL SOUTH by three quarters. Finishing best of all in this race was AZINCOURT (beaten a length and a quarter) who didn’t find the clearest of passages en-route from the rear.

The faster of the two 1400m events on the card was the Gr3 Prix Du Cap in which the very well weighted PRICELESS JEWEL registered her sixth career victory from just fifteen starts. On leaving the stalls it was the confirmed frontrunner JEAN’S PRIDE who elected to make the running whilst the daughter of Ashaawes raced close up in third. She quickened well early in the straight and with the benefit of first run she comfortably accounted for the running on LANNER FALCON by a length.

Along with the Prix Du Cap the Gr3 Chairman’s Handicap over 3200m topped the bill and here we saw a smart performance from the Dean Kannemeyer trained HOT TICKET. Taking a drop in class here the confidently ridden Hot Ticket raced much closer to the pace than he had done in recent starts. It was just a matter of when Karl Neisius was going to press the button in the home straight and when he did so 300m out Hot Ticket quickly took command.

Titbits

Having only his second career outing in the maiden juvenile 1200m, KINGVOLDT ran on well from midfield and won going away.

The Inspiring Story Of Dr Marianne Thomson

‘I am writing this as an older, small breeder and in our language, Markus, because this is our war. If I phoned you, I’d be overwhelmed by business jargon within a minute. What makes you so angry that you don’t care what you are doing to our shaky industry? How do you deal with this in your inner, quiet self?’
