Celebrating Freedom Day

While SA racing waits for the news...

While it remains one of the most historically significant days on our calendar, the Freedom Day celebrations today are likely to be a lot more subdued than usual with the Rainbow Nation still in lockdown.

The day commemorates the first post-apartheid elections held in this country twenty six years ago.

The day has also taken on significance for South African horseracing as the industry reaches a crossroads and waits for an answer on whether the government will allow some life to be pumped into the racing and breeding economy with the commencement of local racing.

While there has been no official confirmation, the Sporting Post has learnt that we will know our fate today.

Whether it’s as simple as the government viewing us as a sport or classing racing into the agriculture category, who really knows? It’s pointless speculating as, as we have had various versions – mostly pure speculation – and nothing official.

It’s in the lap of the gods, right now.

If you are keen on enjoying the day amid the Freedom Day celebrations and having a flutter, Hollywoodbets have lined up sixteen venues, with starting times as reflected on the listing below.

The first meeting at Narromine is off at 04h10 –  a typically early Aussie start for SA racing fans.
