When the 6yo Foveros (FR) won the Heed Your Hunch @betway Handicap, the final race of Tattersalls Irish Guineas weekend at the Curragh on Sunday, we wondered if he was permitted to carry the same name as the eight-times British-bred SA Champion Sire, who died suddenly in 1994?

A winner of 5 races, three over hurdles, from 16 starts, the Willie Mullins trained galloper is a son of Authorized and was bred by Virginia Fragiskos & S C E A Haras Du Hoguenet.
After racing in Europe early in his career – he was Gr1 placed in France and rated 121 with Timeform – our champion Foveros scored three Gr1 wins in South Africa at 5 and 6.

He was Champion Sire here 8 times and sired 17 Gr1 winners – 39 graded winners in all.
Foveros was as good with colts as fillies, with sprinters and milers as with stayers.
Amongst his best progeny were multiple Gr1 winning stayer Aquanaut, sprinters Simonside and Fulfillment, sprint/miler Enforce, and milers Singing Boy and Miss Averof.
The NHRA’s Hazel Kayiya told the Sporting Post that for Foveros to be included under the International list of protected names, he would need to meet one of the below requirements:
Prior to 1996, horses who are internationally renowned, either as main stallions and broodmares or as champions in racing (flat or jump)
From 1996 to 2004, the winners of the nine following international races:
South America : Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini, Grande Premio Brazil;
Asia : Japan Cup, Melbourne Cup ;
Europe : Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Queen Elizabeth II Stakes; and
North America : Breeders’ Cup Classic, Breeders’ Cup Turf.
Since 2005, the winners of the eleven famous following international races :
South America : Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini, Grande Premio Brazil;
Cox Plate (2005), Melbourne Cup (from 2006 onwards), Dubai World Cup, Hong Kong Cup, Japan Cup;
Europe : Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Irish Champion;
North America : Breeders’ Cup Classic, Breeders’ Cup Turf;
Horses who are honoured in any ceremony related to the year-end ranking produced by the Longines’ Worlds’ Best Racehorses Rankings Committee.
Under breeding stock: protection is given to:
Broodmares who have produced at least two Group 1 winners and one other Black Type winner.
Stallions who have produced at least 15 Individual Gr1 winners.
Only those Gr1 races listed under the Part 1 of the international cataloguing standards would qualify for consideration.
