It’s The Summer Of 49!

Trippi is making waves

Descendants of deceased champion Forty Niner dominated feature race action in South Africa over the past two weekends.

Forty Niner is the grandsire of inform stallion, Trippi, and his recently pensioned son, Distorted Humor, is the sire of Flower Alley and Pathfork, both of whom enjoyed feature race success over the past weekend.

Former champion South African sire Trippi (by Forty Niner’s son, End Sweep) has made waves as both a sire and broodmare sire recently.

Trippi is the sire of impressive recent Gr3 Cape Classic winner, Trip Of Fortune, and equally impressive Gr2 Western Cape Fillies Championship winner, Amanzimtoti, and  also features as the broodmare sire of Friday’s Listed Nelson Mandela Bay Racing Algoa Cup winner, Hoedspruit (Legislate). The latter was produced by the Trippi mare, Londalozi.

Trippi’s very promising maternal grandson, Not This Time (Giant’s Causeway) also made waves over the past week, with Not This Time’s blue blooded daughter Marr Time making a very impressive winning debut. A half-sister to all of Into Mischief, Mendelssohn and Beholder, two-year-old Marr Time romped home to a two and three-quarter length win at Keeneland on Thursday and she looks a potential black-type horse.

Trippi, whose daughter Veld Flower ran second in Saturday’s Gr3 Yellowwood Handicap, is also broodmare sire of Fifty Fiver and Queen Of Shadows, who ran first and third respectively in Saturday’s CTS De Grendel Ready To Run Stakes.

Forty Niner’s son, Distorted Humor, whose progeny have won all three legs of the US Triple Crown, has made his mark in South Africa through his Ge1 winning sons, Flower Alley and Pathfork.

Pathfork made headlines at Turffontein on Saturday with his son Bingwa scoring a decisive win in the R800 000 Gr2 Allied Steelrode-Onamissionmile.

Pathfork (Distorted Humor – Visions of Clarity)

One of more than 25 black type horses for his Gr1 winning sire, Bingwa continued the good run of form enjoyed by this male line with his impressive performance on Saturday. Pathfork went close to enjoying a feature race double at Turffontein, with his son Marchingontogether running a close third in the Listed Java Stakes.

Pathfork’s paternal half-brother Flower Alley also fared well at Turffontein on Saturday. His daughter Bold Fortune landed the Gr3 Yellowwood Handicap, and Flower Alley also provided the winners of Turffontein’s second and third races.

Bold Fortune is inbred to Forty Niner (who died at the ripe old age of 35), being sired by Flower Alley and her dam Plata Parana being sired by Forty Niner’s son, Rich Man’s Gold.

Flower Alley, whose Kenilworth Cup winning son Bayberry ran fourth in Friday’s Algoa Cup, is also responsible for the very talented filly, Santa Therese. The latter, already a triple Listed winner, made it seven wins on the bounce when scoring at Fairview on Friday.
