Wilgerbosdrift’s exciting young sire Flower Alley was represented by a new graded stakes winner in North America this past weekend.
His son Bullards Alley, who provided trainer Tim Glyshaw with the first graded winner of his career, romped home to score an impressive victory in the Gr3 Louisville Handicap at Churchill Downs.
The four-year-old gelding, who was ridden by Francisco Torres, looped into contention after tracking a slow pace and went on to prevail by 2 1/4 lengths over Johns Kitten. Roman Approval was another half-length back in third in a field of six older horses.
His trainer was delighted with the win in the $100 000 contest, saying, ““I entered with the idea of running if the race came off [the turf].He’s the nicest horse in our barn. Cisco rode him great.”
Bullards Alley, who is out of a Kris S mare (and is thus bred on similar terms to Flower Alley’s champion son I’ll Have Another), has now won five times, with his previous wins including the Woodchopper Handicap.
His Gr1 Travers Stakes winning sire, Flower Alley, is enjoying another fantastic year in 2016, with his top performers this season including G1 Gulfstream Park Handicap winner Lukes Alley, who has won or placed in 12 of 14 outings and has earned over $750 000 in stakes.
Flower Alley, who is currently the 19th leading Turf Sire in North America (he ranks above the likes of Arch, Distorted Humor, Galileo, Hard Spun, Speightstown and War Front on the list), has 17 stakes winners to his credit, including US champion, and Kentucky Derby winner, I’ll Have Another.
Fully booked in his first South African season last year, Flower Alley’s eagerly anticipated first SA foals will arrive in 2016.
