Punters continued on the rocky results road start to 2016 as Muzi Yeni rode a finely judged race to keep the Querari gelding Racing Red going from gun to tape to clinch the lion’s share of the R100 000 Flamingo Park Sprint run in the Northern Cape on Monday.
The initial favourite Blast played up and demonstrated his wayward starting temperament leading to his withdrawal. The race was thrown wide open with the consistent Just A Jag replacing him as tote favourite.
With La Tourelle , Protest Song and Night Editor slow out, Muzi Yeni had Racing Red galloping out front from the jump, with Just A Jag and Devon Gold in his slipstream.
Into the home run, Just A Jag loomed ominously under eplacement rider Jarryd Penny down the inside rail but Racing Red was not stopping and he stayed on doggedly to win by a length in a time of 72,78 secs.
He started at 12-1 and was in under sufferance at the weights.
Just A Jag maintained his consistency and should not be long in winning again.
The 50-1 Devon Gold kicked on well to grab third, a further half length back.
Racing Red has now won 2 races with 3 places from 10 starts for stakes of R143 350.
He was originally trained by Roy Magner and won once in six starts in Gauteng.
He transferred to Cliffie Miller in the Northern Cape following the closure of the Vaal sand and then to Phillip Smith.
Bred by Maine Chance Farms, the gelding is a son of Querari out of the twice winning National Assembly mare, Racing Heart.
He was purchased for R50 000 on the National Two Year Old Sale and looks to have a bright future on the Kimberley sand.
Gunter Wrogemann rode a hat-trick on the day and thanked Phumelela for increasing stakes in the Northern Cape.
